In a thought-provoking paper presented during the CBCN first 2024 plenary assembly, Rev. Fr. (Prof.) Anthony Akinwale raised a crucial concern regarding doctrinal deviations, liturgical aberrations, and pastoral malpractices within the Church in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for Catholic bishops to prioritize addressing these issues, which have been overshadowed by other concerns.
Fr. Akinwale highlighted the pervasive influence of Pentecostalism within the Catholic space in Nigeria, describing it as a significant challenge that warrants immediate attention. He noted the proliferation of new religious communities and ministries, some lacking in spiritual depth and authenticity, which has compromised the credibility of Christianity, particularly Catholicism, in the country.
Drawing attention to the erosion of the Church’s credibility due to the activities of certain ministries and ministers, Fr. Akinwale underscored the need for discernment and vigilance among the clergy and faithful. He lamented the promotion of fake prophecies, staged miracles, and sacrilegious practices, which exploit the vulnerability of the populace and undermine the integrity of the Catholic faith.
Fr. Akinwale clarified that the ongoing synod should not be viewed as a political consensus but rather as a communal pursuit of truth and communion with God. He urged humility in the search for truth and emphasized the importance of unity in addressing the challenges facing the Church.
As the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, Lagos, Fr. Akinwale called upon the Church in Nigeria to demonstrate the courage of martyrs in upholding apostolic tradition and confronting contemporary issues. He challenged the bishops to identify and address concerns related to apostolic tradition, the synodal process, and socio-ecclesial realities with unwavering courage and dedication.
