…Commends Peter Obi’s defection, describes NDC as a credible alternative
By Sunny A. David, Awka
The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has restructured its leadership in Anambra State, inaugurating a new State Executive Committee (EXCO) after the formal dissolution of its previous leadership in line with constitutional provisions.
At a well-attended congress held on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Beautiful Gate Hotel in Awka, Hon. David Patrick Chukwudifu was elected as the State Chairman. He is expected to lead the party’s affairs in the State for the next four years.
The newly constituted EXCO, produced through a consensus arrangement, includes Barrister Udeze Arinzechukwu Daniel as State Secretary, Hon. Austin Onyeka as Assistant Secretary, Hon. Samuel Orji as Treasurer, Ahmed Hauwa as Assistant Treasurer, Chioma Okonkwo as Financial Secretary, Udensi Samuel as Organizing Secretary, Barrister Obumse Nwachukwu as Legal Adviser, and Nweke Juliet as Publicity Secretary, among others.
The leadership transition followed a motion for the dissolution of the former EXCO moved by Hon. Celestine Osunkwo. This was immediately followed by a motion for the conduct of a fresh congress, moved by Hon. Prince Chukwuemeka Achufusi, a former Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture in Anaocha LGA, and seconded by Hon. Chinedu Odozor of Onitsha South LGA.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Chukwudifu expressed gratitude for the support he received, describing his emergence as both humbling and divinely inspired.
He stated that the NDC is rapidly positioning itself as a leading political force in Nigeria, driven by growing grassroots support and a people-focused agenda.
Chukwudifu also welcomed the defection of Peter Obi, describing it as a significant development for the party and a boost to its credibility.
According to him, Obi represents hope and responsible leadership, adding that the party is committed to inclusivity and giving every member a voice.
Referencing Obi’s well-known quote about rising beyond limitations, Chukwudifu noted that his own emergence as one of the youngest State Chairmen reflects that ideal.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including Mr. Kingsley Ajunwa and Mr. Nonso Okolo from the Election and Party Monitoring Department, supervised the exercise. They confirmed that the congress was peaceful, orderly, and conducted in accordance with due process, with all positions filled through consensus.
