In his annual message for the 2024 World Day of Social Communications, Pope Francis delves into the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the fabric of information and communication. The theme, “Artificial Intelligence and the Wisdom of the Heart: Towards a Fully Human Communication,” is intricately linked to the Pope’s broader concerns about the development of AI systems, echoing themes he previously explored in the World Day of Peace message.
Pope Francis emphasizes the far-reaching influence of AI, noting that it is reshaping fundamental aspects of life in society. Amidst these changes, he poses a critical question: How can humanity navigate this cultural transformation while remaining fully human and steering it towards a noble purpose?
The Pontiff grounds his reflections in the concept of the human heart, drawing inspiration from biblical symbolism. The heart, in this context, represents not only the seat of emotions and decision-making but also the profound space for encounters with the divine. Pope Francis coins the term “wisdom of the heart,” describing it as the virtue that enables the harmonious integration of various dimensions of life – decisions and consequences, nobility and vulnerability, past and future, individuality and communal belonging.
Crucially, the Pope asserts that this wisdom cannot be replicated by machines. While acknowledging the utility of AI in processing data, he contends that the true value lies in the human capacity to make sense of that data, turning it into meaningful information. The inclination of the human heart, Pope Francis warns, determines whether technology becomes an opportunity or a threat.
In a nuanced exploration of AI, he distinguishes between the technology of simulation and the true human capability to give meaning to information. The Pope emphasizes the importance of ethical regulation, recognizing its necessity while cautioning that regulation alone is insufficient.
Addressing the broader societal context, Pope Francis invites everyone to grow collectively “in humanity and as humanity.” He envisions a society that embraces complexity, diversity, and multiculturalism, challenging individuals to make a qualitative leap.
Turning to the realm of information, the Pope intertwines it with living relationships. He asserts that genuine relationships involve not only the body and immersion into the real world but also encompass human experiences, compassion, and sharing. The Pope pays tribute to reporters who risk their lives to convey the suffering of others, underscoring the irreplaceable nature of direct contact with human experiences.
Concluding his message, Pope Francis implores humanity to make a conscious choice: either becoming mere subjects to algorithms or nurturing hearts with the freedom necessary for genuine growth in wisdom. He calls for a shared commitment to enhance discernment and vigilance, guiding the ethical use of AI in the service of fully human communication. The Pope prays that humanity retains its bearings, invoking the return of wisdom that predates modern technology, asserting that it can guide the ethical deployment of AI systems to serve human communication in its truest form.
