Archbishop Gabriel Leke Abegunrin of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan, emphasized the need for subsidized food items to reach Nigerians effectively. Speaking at the Justice, Development, and Peace Commission in Ibadan, Archbishop Abegunrin expressed concerns about the distribution of palliatives and called for transparency in social welfare packages.
Accompanied by Rev Jerome Ajakaye, Coordinator of JDPC, Mrs Moji Ladipo, former Registrar of the University of Ibadan, and other church leaders, Archbishop Abegunrin highlighted the economic challenges exacerbated by the linkage of Bank Verification Number (BVN) and National Identification Number (NIN), causing distress among citizens.
Addressing the rising incidents of kidnapping and banditry, Archbishop Abegunrin criticized the government’s failure to bring sponsors of such crimes to justice. He stressed the importance of adequate security measures to prevent individuals from resorting to vigilante actions due to insecurity.
Furthermore, the church reiterated its call for the return of schools to their original owners, citing the academic excellence and holistic education provided by Catholic schools nationwide.
Archbishop Abegunrin proposed subsidizing food items in markets instead of offering palliatives to a select few, suggesting that this approach would benefit the masses more effectively.
