Sequel to cultural erosion threatening the existence of Igbo cultures, the Parish Monarch St Anthony Catholic church Nkpor Sir Aloysius Ezechinemelu recently called on Igbo parents especially those living in towns and cities not to allow Igbo language to die.
Igwe Ezechinemelu lamented that so many Igbo parents are no longer interested in teaching their children Igbo language as they preferred English language to be used in their homes, a development that will lead to extinction of Igbo language in the nearest future.
“Igbo language is our identity as Igbos. If other aspects of our culture is allowed to be fizzled out because of westernization, our language should be safeguarded at all cost because that remains our last identity as a nation”.
The Monarch noted that other nations such as Yoruba, Hausa people do not toy with their native dialects . “People of these nations, matter how learned they may be, they communicate in their dialects more often than in English language unless during official functions where other tribes gathered.
He charged fellow Igbos to embrace such habit in order to save Igbo language from imminent extinction.
