Amid rising economic hardship across the country, an inspiring act of honesty by a commercial driver has warmed hearts and rekindled hope in the integrity of everyday Nigerians.
On Sunday, April 6, 2025, Mr. Chike Obuofia Tendency, a driver plying the Okigwe–Port Harcourt route, returned a laptop that had been forgotten in his vehicle by a passenger. Unbeknownst to him, the passenger was a Catholic priest who had earlier been involved in a road accident near Awgu, forcing him to continue his journey by public transport.
According to accounts, the priest had requested to be dropped off at Oil Mill in Port Harcourt around 8:00 p.m., but Mr. Chike, citing security concerns, declined and instead agreed to drop him off at the Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA).
Upon reaching CIWA, the priest disembarked, unaware that his laptop was still on the front passenger seat. Mr. Chike, who was still unaware of the priest’s clerical status, drove home with another passenger. It wasn’t until he arrived at his residence that he discovered the forgotten device.
Faced with the challenge of returning the laptop without any direct contact information, Mr. Chike made the selfless decision to drive back to CIWA. There, with the assistance of other residents at the institute, he was able to reunite the laptop with its rightful owner.
This rare display of honesty has been widely praised, with many calling it a reminder that, despite economic difficulties, there are still Nigerians who embody integrity and kindness.
