In a press statement issued on Friday and published on his verified social media account, former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has strongly denounced the distortion of facts surrounding his actions and statements during his tenure as governor.

Specifically, he addressed the ongoing demolitions for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal super highway and refuted allegations of incitement against the government.
During his governorship, Obi emphasized that all structures obstructing existing roads without proper approval would be removed. He clarified that the circulated video clearly stated this and that he only initiated removal when construction had already begun. Any insinuation suggesting otherwise, according to Obi, is a blatant misrepresentation of the truth.

Obi challenged anyone to verify and show evidence where the demolished structures on existing roads or ongoing businesses were not encroaching on the road and built without government approval during his tenure as governor.

To provide further clarity, Obi cited concrete examples of demolitions carried out during his administration. He decisively demolished the Onitsha North local government headquarters, which was situated on the only existing stadium. The headquarters was relocated, and a brand new structure was built for the local government office away from the stadium. This action was taken to restore the stadium to its original purpose as a sporting facility. The stadium was subsequently named after Chuba Ikpeazu, the first owner of the first football club figure in Nigerian sports.

Similarly, the Onitsha South Stadium, which was the sole local playing ground for the community, was converted into a local government office. Obi recognized the importance of recreational spaces and reverted the stadium to its original status by demolishing and relocating the local government office. The stadium was then renovated and named after Godwin Achebe, the longest-serving Green Eagles captain.

Obi emphasized that his actions were strategic, aimed at prioritizing the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure over projects that risked disruption and destruction. He stated that his approach aimed to safeguard the livelihoods of Nigerians and ensure the efficient use of resources.

Regarding the comparisons drawn between his actions on Brewery Road and the ongoing coastal super highway project, Obi clarified that he never proposed creating a new road that would disrupt existing structures. Instead, his focus was on removing obstructions on existing roads to enhance accessibility and safety for all. He highlighted the stark contrast between the ongoing destruction and disruption of jobs and livelihoods associated with the coastal road construction and his administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure while minimizing adverse impacts on communities.

Obi firmly rejected the allegations of incitement against the government, stating that his focus has always been on fostering constructive dialogue and inclusivity. He emphasized that claims of incitement are baseless distractions and that he has consistently advocated for unity and advancement, refusing to engage in divisive politics.
Furthermore, Obi emphasized his refusal to engage in ethnic politics and stated that he has never based his political aspirations on any sectional or ethnic interest. He reaffirmed his commitment to serving with integrity and encouraged all Nigerians to unite for a prosperous future.

In conclusion, Obi stood by his record as governor and rejected any attempts to distort the narrative for political gain. He reiterated his commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of all Nigerians and insisted that our national resources be applied with maximum frugality.
