In a message to participants at the 47th session of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Governing Council, Pope Francis conveyed gratitude for their dedication to building a world where dignity is upheld and fraternity reigns.
Acknowledging the stark contrast of hunger amidst food waste in today’s world, Pope Francis lamented the insensitivity that leads to the squandering of food while millions suffer from hunger. He emphasized that the annual waste of food generates massive amounts of greenhouse gases, while efficient distribution could easily alleviate hunger worldwide.
Warning against pushing the world to perilous limits, the Pope highlighted climate change, resource depletion, and escalating conflicts that disproportionately affect rural communities and indigenous peoples. He underscored the importance of leveraging the knowledge and connection to the environment of these communities to preserve biodiversity.
Addressing the plight of women in rural areas, Pope Francis emphasized their pivotal role in food-insecure households and highlighted the need for empowering them with training and opportunities, alongside the youth.
Encouraging concrete actions over abstract strategies, Pope Francis called for collective efforts to create a more inclusive agricultural and food system. He urged cooperation and service to eliminate the root causes of exclusion, poverty, and resource mismanagement, while addressing the impacts of climate crises.
In closing, Pope Francis offered prayers for fruitful deliberations guided by a spirit of cooperation, aiming to tackle the multifaceted challenges of hunger, poverty, and environmental degradation.
