During an exclusive conversation with CSN Media while visiting the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria in Abuja during the first 2024 plenary assembly of the CBCN, Rev. Fr. Antonio Porcellato, the Superior General of the Society of African Mission (SMA), underscored the Nigerian church’s ongoing journey on the path of synodality, as advocated by Pope Francis.
Fr. Porcellato explained that the Synod on Synodality, initiated by Pope Francis, aims to foster unity and collaboration among Christians, including bishops, priests, religious, and laypeople, in making decisions, praying, and working together despite their differences. He noted with appreciation the synodal nature of the Nigerian church, evident in the inclusive participation and dialogue observed during parish activities and within the Bishops’ Conference.
Acknowledging the historical presence of the SMA congregation in Nigeria for over 40 years, Fr. Porcellato highlighted the significant contributions of Nigerian priests, both locally and as missionaries abroad. He commended the growth of the Catholic faith in Nigeria, particularly in terms of infrastructure development, while also stressing the importance of addressing social challenges such as corruption and injustice.
Fr. Porcellato encouraged Nigerian youths to actively engage in addressing social issues and living out their faith authentically, emphasizing the need for sincere commitment to Christian values in tackling societal problems. As the first Italian to serve as Superior General of the SMA, Fr. Porcellato brings a wealth of experience and perspective to his observations on the Nigerian church’s synodal journey and its role in shaping the future of Catholicism in Africa.
