In the dead of night, a devastating fire broke out, consuming no less than four shops within the bustling Nkwo Market, located in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Eyewitnesses recounted that the inferno, suspected to have been triggered by a power surge, raged uncontrollably for several hours before the arrival of the state fire service personnel, who valiantly battled to subdue the flames.
Upon arrival at the scene, our correspondent observed distraught traders sifting through the charred remains of their once-thriving businesses. Although the blaze claimed no lives, it wrought havoc on goods and properties housed within the affected shops, predominantly stocked with provisions, plastics, and hair attachments.
This incident adds to the spate of recent fires plaguing the state, including two separate incidents on Friday—one at a residential building in Rockland Estate, Awka, and another at a telecommunication mast in Agu Awka. Since September 2023, Anambra has witnessed approximately 24 fire outbreaks, with nine occurring in January 2024 and eight in February alone.
Confirming the latest incident, Martin Agbili, the chief of the state fire service, disclosed that his team received the distress call around 1:20 am. Rushing to the scene, firefighters, aided by courageous members of the public, swiftly mobilized to combat the blaze. While the exact cause remains under investigation, initial assessments point to a suspected power surge as the likely trigger.
Agbili reiterated the importance of vigilance regarding electrical safety, urging residents to diligently switch off appliances when not in use to mitigate the risk of similar incidents. As affected traders grapple with the aftermath of the devastation, the community remains on high alert, cognizant of the ever-present threat posed by fire outbreaks and the imperative of proactive prevention measures.
