The Local Ordinary of the Catholic Diocese of Zaria, Most Rev. Dr. Habila Tyiakonaboi Daboh has urged parents to train their children by leading exemplary lives. He observed that some parents expect what they do not offer from their children, explaining that children need their good examples more than they need their provision.
The bishop told the story of a father who always told his son to be honest in everything he did. But when the landlord came for the rent, the same father told his son to say he was not at home, while he hid inside. Though the son obeyed, later in the evening, when the father rebuked him for lying to his mother, he replied, ‘But daddy, you taught me how to tell lies.’
His lordship also cited a promising young graduate who, after struggling to secure a job, got an offer, on the condition that he falsified his documents, since ‘nobody will know.’ But remembering his upbringing and his faith, the graduate refused. He detailed that though the tempted suffered for a time, through perseverance and honesty, he found a path that not only gave him success but also salvation. He was also respected, “not only for what he has, but for who he is.”
“Your children need more than your provision.” His Lordship continued. “They need your example. If we want our children to stand for truth, we must stand for truth and be truthful. If we want them to respect their faith, we must show them our faith and be faithful. Encourage them. Pray with and for them. Remind them that wherever they go, whether in Nigeria or abroad, they carry not only their family name, but also their Christian identity.”
Bishop Daboh specifically told parents of adult children that though they have scarified, prayed and have supported them when they were younger, their mission continues as their offspring embark on new phases of their lives.
