In a shocking turn of events, Adachukwu Chikelu-Okafor, a prominent lawyer based in Anambra, has surrendered herself to the authorities after being accused of brutally mistreating her 11-year-old househelp. The incident, which sent shockwaves through the community, allegedly involved the insertion of a hot knife into the young girl’s private area.
Chikelu-Okafor’s decision to turn herself in came after she had been on the run following the disturbing allegations. Both the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the State Ministry of Women Affairs had issued statements declaring her wanted, accompanied by a substantial bounty for any information leading to her arrest.
Reports suggest that the lawyer fled the scene shortly after the incident, prompting a widespread search by law enforcement agencies. Despite her initial evasion, she eventually chose to face the consequences of her actions and surrendered to the state police.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that Chikelu-Okafor is now in their custody, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation. The state government, eager to ensure justice is served, has announced plans to arraign her before the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka within the coming week.
Mrs. Ify Obinabo, the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, has been actively involved in the case. She personally visited the victim, who had been hospitalized due to the severity of her injuries. Fortunately, the young girl has since received medical treatment and has been discharged from the hospital.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare and protection of vulnerable individuals, particularly children. She emphasized the need for swift and decisive action in cases of abuse and violence, affirming that justice will be pursued rigorously.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains vigilant, hopeful for a resolution that will bring closure to the victim and serve as a deterrent against such heinous acts in the future.
