At the conclusion of a Mass in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV appealed to global political leaders to fully commit to the ongoing peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
Highlighting recent progress in the talks, the Pope expressed hope that a peace agreement would be reached “as soon as possible.”
He called on the faithful to remain united in prayer for a “just and lasting peace,” while expressing deep sorrow over the “immense suffering” endured by Palestinians in Gaza.
Pope Leo also condemned the global rise in antisemitism, specifically referencing a recent attack on a synagogue in Manchester, England. He emphasized the need for solidarity, peace, and respect among all peoples.
Additionally, during Mass for the Jubilee of Missions and Migrants, the Pope reaffirmed the Church’s missionary identity. Thanking attendees for braving the rain, he stressed that no person should be forced to flee their home or suffer exploitation due to their status as a migrant. “Human dignity must always come first,” he said.
Pope Leo also extended prayers and solidarity to the people of the Philippines following the 6.9 magnitude earthquake earlier in the week, urging them to stay united and support one another in the face of adversity.
