The passing of Professor Ben Nwabueze, a preeminent constitutional lawyer and the founding Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, has brought Nigerians from diverse backgrounds together to pay their respects. Professor Nwabueze passed away on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable influence and impact.
In an official statement released by his family, they expressed deep sorrow at his passing, describing him as a patriarch who lived an exemplary life that left a profound mark on society. The statement, signed by Eni Nwabueze on behalf of the family, announced the sad news and indicated that burial arrangements would be disclosed at a later time.
Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, the Vice-President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, also confirmed the demise of Professor Nwabueze and lauded his “selfless service and dedication” to the advancement of Nigeria. Okeke-Ogene emphasized the immense loss felt not only by Nigeria but also by the Igbo nation, highlighting Nwabueze’s distinction as a principled constitutional lawyer and an advocate for an incorruptible system.
The Credibility Group, an intellectual think tank, shared their condolences and recognized the enduring impact of Professor Nwabueze’s contributions. In a statement from the group’s President, Goddy Uwazuruike, Nwabueze was hailed as a great man in every aspect. Uwazuruike noted that he was revered as the “Oracle of Law” by the late Rotimi Williams SAN, underlining his multifaceted accomplishments, including his role as the first academic to attain the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Professor Ben Nwabueze’s influence extended beyond the legal realm. His tenure as an educator at the University of Nigeria Nsukka produced a generation of lawyers who have assumed vital roles across society. He was a dedicated scholar, known for his extensive research and authored works that remain fundamental texts for law students across Nigeria and the Commonwealth.
Nwabueze’s intellectual brilliance and unwavering courage also garnered attention. He fearlessly expressed his views, even when standing alone, as exemplified by his firm stance on the 2019 presidential election petition. In that instance, he was part of the legal team supporting Atiku Abubakar’s challenge to the election results.
Professor Nwabueze authored more than 34 books, addressing critical topics such as constitutional democracy, federalism, and the presidential constitution of Nigeria. Notably, he made history as the first Nigerian professor to be appointed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and received the prestigious Nigeria National Merit Award (NNMA). His legacy as an accomplished scholar continues to enhance the reputation of the UNN Law Faculty.
Ben Nwabueze’s stature extended beyond academia, as he was a celebrated voice at major public lectures, leaving an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape.
