An Onitsha based Nigerian Red Cross official Mr Chidi Dede Nkobie was during the week rewarded with an undisclosed amount of cash gift for his voluntary and selfless service to Onitsha road users.
Mr Nkobie,a popular Nigerian Red Cross official attached to Onitsha North Division,Nigerian Red Cross,is always spotted in the morning and evening hours at the Oguta Road by Ojedi junction,Onitsha, controlling human and vehicular traffic and ensuring smooth flow of traffic at the chaotic junction.
Nkobie has also saved the lives of many school pupils who he assisted in crossing the road as well as other vulnerable individuals.
Presenting the cash gift in presence of other JDPC officials and wife of Mr Nkobie,the Executive Director,Justice, Development, Peace and Caritas(JDPC) Archdiocese of Onitsha,Rev Fr Dr Edwin Udoye,said his organisation has long been observing the diligence,dedication and commitment of mr Nkobie while discharging his voluntary work.
Fr Udoye pointed out that a lot has to be learnt by Nigerians from Mr Nkobie’s voluntary work.Those things he said,include, selflessness, patriotism, commitment, dedication and volunteerism without seeking monetary payment.
Fr Udoye lamented lack of the spirit of volunteerism among the youths of today adding that good conscience, patriotism and dedication to service have been sacrificed on the altar of greed and avarice.
Fr Udoye expressed the commitment of the JDPC in recognising the likes of Mr Nkobie just as it did earlier to a Police Traffic Warden,among many others and urged other good spirited individuals and organisations to emulate the JDPC.
In his remarks,the recepient,Mr Dede Nkobie expressed gratitude to the JDPC for the reward.He said the reward which came to him as a surprise was encouraging and thanked the JDPC for locating his good works.
According to him,it takes patriotism,integrity and selflessness to do such voluntary work.
