Pope Francis welcomed members of Spain’s “Real Club de Tenis Barcelona” on the occasion of their 125th-anniversary celebration as a sports club. In his address, the Pope highlighted the positive impact of sports on personal and societal growth.
Acknowledging tennis as a non-team sport, Pope Francis reflected on the club’s history, emphasizing its founders’ openness to external influences and cultural dialogue. He noted that while tennis involves a desire to prevail over opponents, it also symbolizes a dialogue that fosters new realities.
The Pope emphasized that in tennis and life, winning isn’t always guaranteed. However, he described the challenge as enriching, emphasizing the importance of playing politely and within the rules to learn that life is not a struggle but a dialogue, involving effort and improvement.
Drawing parallels between the playing field and life, Pope Francis highlighted the occasional feelings of solitude or support from fellow players. He emphasized the constant presence of the Lord, guiding individuals to respect and understand others in the game of life.
In conclusion, the Pope commended the club for its work in training international players. He stressed the importance of prioritizing the integral growth of children involved in sports, ensuring that the demands of training do not overshadow their human and spiritual development. Pope Francis urged the club to care for children, emphasizing that they should not lose their essence and continue to experience the joys of childhood.
