Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, emphasized the importance of leaders leading by example when preaching sacrifice for the betterment of Nigeria. Speaking at the burial Mass of the late Archbishop Maxwell Anikwenwa, Obi commented on the viral video of President Bola Tinubu’s long convoy in Lagos, stating that there is a need to reduce the cost of governance, a position he has always advocated for. Obi highlighted that leaders should demonstrate sacrifice themselves before asking it of the people, as their behavior and conduct should align with societal expectations. He expressed that leaders must be at the forefront of addressing the suffering experienced by the people. Reflecting on the life of Archbishop Anikwenwa, Obi acknowledged his contributions to Nigeria and his advocacy for good governance. Other prominent figures, including Governor Chukwuma Soludo, paid tribute to Anikwenwa, describing him as a respected figure and a soldier of Christ.
