Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address Nigeria’s pressing issues instead of offering excuses. In a post on his X page on Friday, Obi emphasized that the problems facing the nation are well-known to all Nigerians.
The former governor of Anambra State expressed his disappointment over statements from government officials that downplay the severity of Nigeria’s struggles. He specifically criticized remarks suggesting that “Nigerians are not the only ones struggling with poverty and hunger.”
Obi highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the nation’s challenges, which include poverty, insecurity, poor education quality, a high number of out-of-school children, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, a significant income gap, and inadequate infrastructure and healthcare.
In his post, Obi stated: “The problems facing Nigeria are well-known to all Nigerians. We are the poverty capital of the world, among the most insecure people on earth, among the hungriest, have poor education quality and the highest number of out-of-school children, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, the highest income gap between the poor and the rich, high corruption perception index, infrastructure and healthcare challenges, and more.”
He continued, “It is disheartening to hear those in charge, who were hired to address our problems, make statements like ‘we are not the only ones struggling with poverty and hunger.’ Instead of merely acknowledging that other countries face similar challenges, we need to hear a thorough plan of action to tackle our unique struggles.”
Obi stressed that Nigerians seek concrete solutions and a clear vision to address these issues, not comparisons that diminish the urgency of the country’s situation. He urged the federal government to provide tangible solutions and offer direction, guidance, and reassurance in times of crisis.
He concluded by asserting that only when leaders display these qualities can Nigerians begin to trust that the country is in capable hands.
