It was a joyous occasion last Sunday, August 18th 2024 when the Chief Shepherd of Onitsha Archdiocese His Grace Most Rev Valerian Okeke paid a one day pastoral visit to St. Ann’s Parish, Awka Etiti .The spectacular event witnessed administration of sacrament of confirmation on candidates numbering 193.
In his homily, Archbishop Okeke delivered a profound message on the distinction between wisdom and foolishness, underscoring the eternal value of spiritual wisdom. He reminded the congregation that true wisdom is found in seeking God above all else. “To choose God is to choose life,” the Archbishop affirmed, highlighting that wisdom leads one to the Holy Eucharist—a sacred source of divine life, grace, and strength.
The prelate further emphasized that the Eucharist is not merely a ritual or superstition but a reality that Christ lives in our midst. “Those who are wise understand that the Holy Eucharist is the food of the soul, essential for our growth in love, unity, and the life of Christ,” he explained. He warned against the folly of dismissing the Eucharist as insignificant, stressing that such an attitude reflects a lack of understanding of God’s power and presence.
He also called on the newly confirmed to hold tenaciously to their faith with renewed commitment, urging them to remain in a state of grace and avoid the temptations that can lead one away from God. “You are now soldiers of Christ and the Holy Spirit is your guide. Do not return to your old ways, but let the Spirit lead you in living a life that reflects Christ in all you do.”
The Catholic community in their address shortly after the Mass, praised the Archbishop for visiting them, describing his visit as mission of love. They also extolled the prelate over his great achievements in Archdiocese that are currently transforming lives and making our immediate society a better place.
Responding, the Archbishop commended the parish priest Fr Udeaja and the Parishioners for their commitment and sacrifices in moving the Parish forward, urging them to sustain the tempo.
The parish priest Rev Fr Donald Udeaja in his remarks, rained accolades on the Archbishop for visiting them, describing him as lovely prelate who is taking good care of his flock.
Fr Udeaja who later spoke to Trinitas Newspaper said he was elated over the event, positing that the coming of the Chief Shepherd has strengthened them spiritually, physically and otherwise. He commended his parishioners for their usual support and cooperation that made the event a huge success.
Also speaking to Trinitas Newspaper, the Vice Chairman Parish Council, Mr. Ebele Okpara, expressed deep gratitude to Archbishop for visiting them, noting that the confirmation and teachings by the prelate were deeply impactful.
