John Cardinal Onaiyekan has called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to embark on his presidential duties without bias following the Supreme Court’s confirmation of his victory in the disputed February 25 presidential elections.
President Tinubu was inaugurated as Nigeria’s head of state on May 29, despite legal challenges. His electoral victory was upheld on September 6, in accordance with the country’s constitution, prompting the opposition to file an appeal. Cardinal Onaiyekan has urged all Nigerians to support the president’s positive initiatives. However, he also emphasized the importance of holding him accountable for any failures, as part of responsible citizenship.
In his reflection, Cardinal Onaiyekan reminded Nigerians that, despite the court’s verdict, the sovereignty of the people remains intact, and they have not become the property of the president. He urged citizens to rally behind President Tinubu as he takes the reins of the nation for the next four years, emphasizing the need for him to govern the country with peace, freedom, security, and prosperity.
The Cardinal also stressed that President Tinubu should serve all the people without discrimination, partiality, or bias in his role as the leader of Nigeria.
