The Chaplain of St. Luke’s Chaplaincy, Ahmadu Belo University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria Rev Fr. Nehemiah Nkom has reminded leaders of their primary role of serving the people. Making this known at the Mass he celebrated in Our Lady
Queen of Peace Parish, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria on Wednesday 29th May 2024 the priest leaned on the day’s Gospel, Mk.10:22-24, on the request made by James and John to sit closer to Him in asserting that one’s position alone cannot take them to heaven.
“We are called to serve. He said. “If you are made a leader, you are called to serve. Today, James and John tried to Lord it over the other disciples, saying they want to sit beside Jesus.
The other ten were not happy with them. Some people see their positions the other way round today. The moment they are appointed, they feel more superior to others. They see others as nothing.
Sometimes, they relegate their friends. But Jesus would tell us that a leader must be a servant of all. The seat we occupy will not take us to heaven but how we handle the seat and how we treat people. Jesus is calling us to serve.”
Fr. Nkom prayed for the spirit of tolerance and humility so as to mingle and communicate properly with those under their care as they rise to higher ranks in life.
