Peter Obi, the flagbearer of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential polls, has expressed strong criticism of Nigeria’s extensive delegation of 1411 members to the ongoing UN climate summit in Dubai, COP28.
In a statement released on Sunday via his official X account, Obi sarcastically congratulated Nigeria for matching China with an equivalent number of contingents at COP28. He highlighted the stark financial contrast between China, with a budget of about $4 trillion for 2024, and Nigeria, with a budget of approximately $33 billion. Obi expressed concern that the majority of the Nigerian delegation consisted of non-relevant civil servants or individuals associated with high-ranking government officials, including friends and family.
Obi questioned the wisdom behind the significant public expenditure on a large delegation, especially when many members may not comprehend or have direct involvement with climate change issues. He emphasized the financial strain on most Nigerians who struggle to afford basic necessities, making such expenditures seem wasteful.
The former Anambra State governor emphasized the need for Nigeria to shift its focus from such excessive spending to competing with countries like China in terms of productivity and uplifting citizens out of poverty. He called for a more responsible approach to government spending, tying it to necessity and national priorities.
Obi concluded by expressing hope for a future Nigeria that prioritizes efficiency and eliminates wasteful traditions in government practices. He reiterated the possibility of a new Nigeria by advocating for reasonable and necessary actions to address the nation’s challenges.
