Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has pledged to build a new boys’ hostel at Dominican College, Abatete, in Idemili North Local Government Area.
Speaking during the foundation laying ceremony, the former Principal of the school and Superior General of the Holy Family Sisters of the Needy, Sr. Mary Pia Adesanya, expressed gratitude for Obi’s longstanding support.
She recalled how, in 2012, instead of accepting a birthday gift from Spring Bank, Obi requested the funds be used to build hostels in three schools, including Dominican College.
“This gesture reflects his deep commitment to education and the future of young people,” Sr. Pia stated emotionally.
The current Principal, Sr. Clementina Wusaru Oti, also praised Obi’s contributions, noting that his past interventions such as school buses, internet access, computers, and power generators laid the foundation for the college’s continued progress.
Obi revealed that the new hostel project is a collaborative effort with a philanthropist whose mother is from Abatete. “When the school told me about the need for a hostel, I returned to him and he agreed to join me in funding it,” he said.
He also attended Mass with the students, where Rev. Fr. Ernest Esikaikwu of the Most Holy Name of Mary Parish commended Obi’s selfless leadership, urging others to emulate his example.
Addressing the students afterward, Obi encouraged them to prioritize their education, calling it the greatest asset for their future.
The highlight of the visit was Obi’s donation of ₦25 million to kickstart construction immediately.
He was accompanied by Prof. Stella Chinwe Okunna and Prof. Patrick Obi.
