Pope Francis, addressing the faithful in St. Peter’s Square during his Wednesday General Audience, reflected on the role of the Holy Spirit in Christian prayer, emphasizing that “Christian prayer is not simply a person speaking to God alone; rather, it is God praying within us.”
Continuing his series on the Holy Spirit’s influence in the Church, the Pope transitioned from discussing sacraments to focusing on prayer, saying, “The sanctifying action of the Holy Spirit, beyond the Word of God and the Sacraments, is profoundly expressed in prayer.”
Pope Francis noted that the Holy Spirit serves as both the source and focus of Christian prayer: “He gives us prayer, and we pray to receive Him. In doing so, we pray not as slaves but as children of God.”
The Pope highlighted Jesus’ assurance in the Gospel of Luke: “If you who are wicked know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” (Lk 11:13). Pope Francis reminded those gathered that prayer grants us access to the Holy Spirit, who, in turn, bestows upon us the ability to pray sincerely.
Acknowledging human limitations in prayer, Pope Francis assured, “The Holy Spirit aids us in our weakness, but He does even more—He reminds us that we are children of God, putting on our lips the cry: ‘Abba! Father!’” The Holy Spirit, he explained, serves as our “Paraclete,” or advocate, defending rather than accusing us before God.
Pope Francis further emphasized that the Holy Spirit not only intercedes on our behalf but also teaches us how to intercede for others. Intercessory prayer, he said, is “especially pleasing to God because it is a selfless and generous form of prayer.” Quoting St. Ambrose, the Pope observed, “When someone prays for everyone, it is as if everyone prays for someone in particular, multiplying the power of prayer.”
As the Church prepares for the upcoming Jubilee, Pope Francis encouraged the faithful to unite with the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, who “intercedes for the saints according to God’s plan.”
