In his message for the 39th World Youth Day, Pope Francis addressed young people around the world with a powerful theme centered on hope and perseverance. Titled “Those who hope in the Lord will run and not be weary,” the message draws inspiration from the prophet Isaiah and emphasizes the active nature of hope.
Pope Francis urged young people to view life as a pilgrimage—a journey filled with both the pursuit of happiness and inevitable struggles. He encouraged them to let hope shine brightest during difficult moments, reminding them that hope is not passive but an active force received as a gift from God, propelling them forward despite challenges.
The Pope acknowledged the fatigue that often comes with life’s hardships but reassured the youth that true relief comes not from rest but from becoming “pilgrims of hope.” He cautioned against the stagnation that arises from inactivity and apathy, stating, “I prefer the tiredness of those who are moving forward, not the ennui of those who stand still.”
In his message, Pope Francis likened the journey of today’s youth to the Israelites’ journey through the desert. He reminded them that even in moments of crisis and despair, God remains close, nourishing His people with His presence, just as He provided manna in the wilderness.
The Pope also highlighted the significance of the Eucharist, urging young people to rediscover its profound value. He described the Eucharist as “the highway to heaven,” encouraging them to embrace it as a source of strength and guidance on their journey through life.
This uplifting message calls on young people to embrace endurance, hope, and faith as they navigate the challenges of life, with God’s presence and guidance ever by their side.
