In Lebanon, a widespread show of faith took to the streets on October 4, 2025, as thousands of Christian faithful participated in a solemn procession to honour Father Bechara Abou Mrad, a Melkite priest who is now on the path toward sainthood.
The event, known as the “Walking Towards You” procession, began at the convent and school of the Salvatorian Sisters in Joun and wound its way to the nearby Greek Catholic Monastery of the Saviour, where Father Mrad lived and where his tomb is located. The faithful carried icons, flags, and lit candles as hymns echoed through the streets.
Born Salim Abou Mrad in 1853 in Zahle, Lebanon, he entered the Basilian Order of the Most Holy Savior at 21 and took the religious name “Bechara.” Over his life, he became known for his humility, ascetic life, and dedication to service. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI recognized his “heroic virtue,” declaring him Venerable.
Clergy and laity from across Lebanon and nearby regions joined the procession. The ceremony concluded with a Mass led by Archimandrite Antoine Rizk at the monastery.
Rev. Fr Youssef Mezher, parish priest of al-Mharebiyya in South Lebanon, said the procession was deeply meaningful: “We felt as though Father Bechara himself was illuminating the area with his presence.” He described the event as a renewal of “Salvatorian spirituality” and a source of new strength for families and youth amid Lebanon’s ongoing hardships.
