During the homily at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Abuja on July 28, 2024, Archbishop I.A. Kaigama issued a stern admonition to leaders, urging them to cease hoarding public resources for personal gain.
Addressing the congregation on the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Archbishop Kaigama emphasized the virtue of compassion and generosity as exemplified in the day’s readings.
The Local Ordinary drew parallels between the biblical stories of Elisha and Jesus, both of whom performed miracles to feed the hungry with limited resources, underscoring the importance of sharing and helping those in need.
He criticized those in power who are detached from the realities of hunger and poverty, imploring them to prioritize the welfare of the people over personal enrichment.
He called on leaders to emulate the selflessness of Elisha and Jesus, urging every individual to contribute, no matter how small, to alleviate the suffering of others.
“We pray that our leaders will be compassionate to hear the cry of the people. Our leaders must move away from hoarding public resources for personal gain,” Kaigama
said.
The Archbishop’s message was delivered amidst the confirmation of 230 parishioners
and the sacrament of matrimony for 12 couples, highlighting a day dedicated to community and faith. He encouraged all present to act with generosity and faith, reinforcing that true giving comes from the heart, not from abundance.
The homily concluded with a prayer for an increase in compassionate individuals in Nigeria, inspired by the example of Mother Teresa, who transformed a small act of kindness into a global mission of charity.
