Amidst an air of solemnity, the town of Ojoto in Anambra state stood united in mourning as it laid to rest one of its most illustrious sons, Senator Annie Okonkwo. The funeral proceedings, a blend of somber reverence and celebration of a life well-lived, attracted mourners from across the nation.
St. Paul’s Catholic Church, a symbolic sanctuary of solace, resonated with prayers and hymns as a funeral mass was conducted to honor Senator Okonkwo’s memory. The archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, led the proceedings, accompanied by the bishop of Awka diocese, Paulinus Ezeokafor and other distinguished clergymen. Also, in attendance was the Catholic Bishop of Ekwulobia diocese, Cardinal Peter Ebere Okpaleke, represented by Fr Prof ABC Chiegboka.
Other dignitaries in attendance included the Senate President of the federation, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senator Tony Nwoye, Senator Andy Ubah, Mr. Peter Obi and a host of others.
During the mass, the homily was delivered by Rev Fr Emeka Aroh, his words offering a heartwarming tribute to the memory of the deceased statesman.
In his condolence remarks, the Senate president, Senator Akpabio eloquently captured the sentiments of many, underscoring Senator Okonkwo’s profound impact on the community of Ojoto. He marveled at how the late senator had single-handedly elevated the reputation of Ojoto, and assured the gathering that the Senate would forever cherish his memory.
The Senate President took a moment to shift the focus to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, praising his pivotal role in rejuvenating Nigeria’s banking sector. The comparison to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor was not lost on those present, highlighting the governor’s significance.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo, in his poignant condolence message, paid homage to the late senator’s dedication and service. He remarked on Senator Okonkwo’s profound impact on his constituency and the nation at large, leaving behind a legacy that would be etched in the annals of history.
As the governor extended his heartfelt sympathies to Senator Okonkwo’s family and the entire state, his words echoed the sentiments of a collective grief that transcended local boundaries.
The funeral proceedings were graced by an assembly of notable figures. Governor Alex C. Otti of Abia State, Speaker Somto Udeze, Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, and a host of distinguished senators such as Chris Ngige, Victor Umeh, Ifeanyi Ubah, and Uche Ekwunife, paid their respects in a show of unity and solidarity.
In the eulogies that flowed, Senator Okonkwo emerged as a luminary figure—a seasoned politician, a former senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, a one-time governorship candidate, and an accomplished business mogul. His indelible mark extended beyond the political realm, touching the lives of countless Ndi Anambra and Nigerians, many of whom found livelihoods through his enterprises.
