Renowned political economist Prof. Pat Utomi has urged the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to help curb “stupidity” in the country by holding politicians accountable. He made this call during the HRM Obi Alfred N. Achebe 2nd Lecture series, organized by NIPR in collaboration with Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) at Igbariam, Anambra State.
In his lecture titled “Achieving Peace and Reconciliation in Nigeria: The Public Relations Approach,” Utomi emphasized that selfishness and tribalism lead many Nigerians to view others as enemies, even when there is no basis for such animosity. He stressed that gullibility, particularly in the age of social media, allows politicians to manipulate the public, spreading misinformation without question.
Utomi categorized individuals into four groups based on their behavior: the intelligent (who benefit themselves and others), the bandits (who benefit at others’ expense), the unfortunate (who harm others while trying to help), and the stupid (who harm others without any benefit to themselves). He lamented that many people cheer on politicians whose actions harm the common good, a clear indication of societal dysfunction.
“Stupidity comes dressed as journalists, academics, and even men of God,” Utomi said, emphasizing the need for public relations practitioners to hold leaders accountable and reduce the influence of such individuals in society.
HRM Obi Alfred N. Achebe, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of leadership built on truth and transparency. He spoke about his efforts to foster leadership and entrepreneurship in Onitsha, emphasizing the need for values such as honesty and hard work.
Sen. Ben Ndi Obi, who chaired the occasion, praised NIPR and COOU for hosting the lecture, stressing the need for peace, reconciliation, and fairness in Nigeria. Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, also welcomed the attendees and highlighted ongoing development projects under the leadership of Governor Charles Soludo.
The event concluded with the decoration of Prof. Utomi as a Fellow of NIPR and the presentation of awards to deserving members.
