Senator Dr. Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, was honored on Sunday during the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON), Port Harcourt Diocesan Council. Senator Umeh, who also served as Chairman of the event, was awarded the title of Grand Patron and received a plaque of recognition from the DCCYON.
In presenting the award, the Auxiliary Bishop of Port Harcourt Diocese, Most Rev. Patrick Eluke, lauded Senator Umeh for his exemplary performance in the Senate and his significant contributions to governance and the growth of the Church. Bishop Eluke highlighted the senator’s admirable Christian life and commitment to his Catholic faith, noting that Umeh’s good deeds resonate far beyond his home state of Anambra. He described Senator Umeh as a staunch advocate for justice and an exemplary leader.
In his address, Senator Umeh commended the members of CYON in Port Harcourt Diocese for their dedication to the Church’s growth and expressed his gratitude for the recognition, despite not being a member of the diocese. He emphasized the unity of the Church and the importance of engaging the youth in its activities, asserting that a life grounded in the morals and teachings of the Catholic Church is one destined for societal contribution.
“I congratulate the CYON members of Port Harcourt Diocese on their 40th anniversary. I urge you to remain fully devoted to CYON activities, and when you age out of the organization, continue your commitment through the Catholic Men Organization (CMO) or Catholic Women Organization (CWO), depending on your gender,” Senator Umeh remarked.
He further expressed his optimism about the future leadership roles these enthusiastic youths would play in both the Church and society.
Senator Umeh also acknowledged the national leadership of CYON, led by National President Mr. Gosife Kizito Ezeh from Awka Diocese, as well as the leadership of the Port Harcourt Diocesan Council of CYON, led by Diocesan President Mr. Adom Gabriel. He extended special commendation to Miss Mercy Chiburuoma, Chairperson of the DCCYON 40th Anniversary Organizing Committee, for their dedication to the Church and youth. The Senator encouraged them to continue mobilizing Catholic youths nationwide and instilling in them the true morals and teachings of the Catholic Church amidst rising societal vices.
Senator Umeh reaffirmed his commitment to promoting youth-focused legislative programs and initiatives aimed at creating better opportunities for young people, urging them to pursue personal and skill development.
Senator Umeh was accompanied by Engr. Azubuike Okeke, CEO of Zubiaco World Link Ltd., an esteemed resident of Anambra State in Port Harcourt, and Chief Festus OshabaOnuh, CEO/MD of Ferotex Group, represented by Mr. Kingsley Nwachinemerem, a close friend from Enugu State.
