In a groundbreaking announcement, Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, revealed that Pope Francis will participate in the upcoming G7 summit, marking the first time in history that a Pontiff joins the prestigious gathering. The summit, scheduled to convene in Apulia from June 13 to 15, 2024, will bring together leaders from the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan to address pressing global issues.
Prime Minister Meloni underscored the significance of the Holy See’s contribution to the summit’s agenda, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI). Italy aims to leverage the Pope’s presence to advance discussions on AI ethics, building upon initiatives such as the “Rome Call for AI Ethics in 2020” and promoting the concept of “algoraethics” – the integration of ethics into algorithms.
Expressing confidence in the Pope’s pivotal role in shaping a normative and ethical framework for AI, Prime Minister Meloni invoked the legacy of Pope John Paul II’s seminal address to the United Nations in 1979, highlighting the enduring relevance of moral considerations in technological advancements.
Underlining the anthropological significance of AI, Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the dual nature of the technology, presenting both opportunities and risks that resonate on a global scale. As AI increasingly shapes societal dynamics, she stressed the imperative of prioritizing human-centered governance mechanisms to mitigate risks and uphold human dignity.
In her closing remarks, Prime Minister Meloni reaffirmed the commitment of the international community to safeguarding human agency in the face of technological progress. With the person at the forefront of AI development, she underscored the collective responsibility to steer the trajectory of AI towards outcomes that prioritize human welfare and uphold fundamental ethical principles.
