On the morning of Monday, April 20th, Pope Francis received a delegation from Loyola University, Chicago, in the Hall of the Popes at the Vatican. The visit, part of a pilgrimage to the birthplace of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, was marked by a speech from the Pope emphasizing the essential role of academic institutions in today’s rapidly changing world.
Pope Francis greeted the President and Board of Trustees of Loyola University, expressing his hope that their visit to the roots of Ignatius’ life and spirituality had enriched and inspired their academic and personal growth. He underscored the importance of returning to one’s roots to draw strength and move forward, noting that the institution’s foundation lies in Saint Ignatius’ dedication to seeking God’s will and serving others.
Reflecting on the Jesuit tradition of discernment and action that guides Loyola University, the Pope encouraged the delegation to persist in their quest for truth through deep reflection, attentive listening, and courageous action. He highlighted the need for academic institutions to be witnesses of hope in a world marked by division and conflict, advocating for cooperation and resolution at higher levels.
Pope Francis stressed the comprehensive nature of education, which must engage the mind, heart, and hands.
