Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese has called on President Bola Tinubu to establish clear communication with Nigerians about when his policies will begin to yield positive results. Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, following a meeting with the President, Bishop Kukah acknowledged that the nation is experiencing significant hardships due to recent policy decisions.
While acknowledging the unintended nature of the current pains, Bishop Kukah expressed hope that these policies would eventually benefit the welfare of the people. He emphasized the need for patience and resilience, stating, “Building a good society takes a lot of time.”
The meeting with President Tinubu also involved the Director of the Kukah Centre, where they discussed an upcoming conference focused on national cohesion, extending an invitation to the President to attend.
When asked to evaluate President Tinubu’s administration after one year, Bishop Kukah remarked that it is too early to make definitive judgments. However, he noted that the nation is facing challenging times and that improving communication about policy impacts and timelines is crucial. “The essence of government is to guarantee the welfare and security of ordinary citizens,” he said, emphasizing the importance of transparency and timely information to alleviate public concerns.
Addressing the political crisis in Rivers State, Bishop Kukah downplayed the severity of political disputes, suggesting that politicians have the capacity to resolve their differences. He expressed his hope for the swift repositioning of Rivers State, highlighting its significance within Nigeria.
Bishop Kukah’s comments underscore the importance of governmental transparency and the need for patience and unity during times of national difficulty. He remains optimistic that with clear communication and committed efforts, the nation can navigate through these challenging times towards a more prosperous future.
