Nigeria’s political elite never cease to amaze when it comes to creativity in embezzling public funds and catering off with the state resources at the expense of the poor citizens they’re meant to serve. The recent escapades of former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika and ex-Governor Yahaya Bello clearly prove this to be so.
Mr. Sirika, recently arrested by the Economic Crime and Financial Commission (EFCC), with the finesse of a magician, allegedly orchestrated a dazzling money laundering scheme to the tune of N8,069,176,864.00!! Apparently, the aviation ministry was not just about flying planes; it was a runway for financial acrobatics, with contracts magically disappearing into the pockets of family members faster than a rocket launching into space.
Meanwhile, the vast sum of $720,000 of state funds was siphoned off by former Kogi State governor, Mr. Bello to prepay for his child’s education overseas; how better can one plan ahead? Contrariwise, while everyday individuals struggle to survive, our leaders have a strategic plan in place for their children’s education, playing with our futures like chess grandmasters.
But fear not, dear citizens, for the valiant knights of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are on the prowl, brandishing their swords of justice in pursuit of these modern-day ‘Robin Hoods’. The EFCC chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has declared his commitment to see Mr. Bello brought to justice, even threatening to resign if justice is not served. Such dedication is indeed commendable, though one wonders if resignation is the only consequence politicians fear.
During this whole process, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney-General of the Federation, made an appeal for people to act decently and corporate with law enforcement agencies. He calls on everyone to fulfill their duties and maintain the law’s integrity using terms reminiscent of death and seriousness in one’s words, it is no less than if they come from a Shakespearean tragedy.’ But alas! Some men prefer to evade justice instead of undergoing trials.
In this carnival of corruption, the joke is on us, the citizens, who bear the brunt of mismanagement and malfeasance while our leaders frolic in the gardens of opulence. Let us not be mere spectators in this tragicomedy; let us demand accountability, transparency, and an end to the spectacle of political impunity. For in the end, it is not just the fate of politicians at stake, but the future of our beloved nation.
