In a significant step towards reconciliation, the Nigerian military has issued an official apology for the assault on Father Bernard Unum and his stewards, which took place on August 5 at All Saints Ikyaior Catholic Church in northeast Nigeria. The attack resulted in severe injuries, with one steward losing an eye.
Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, commander of the Jalingo area in Taraba State, has taken responsibility for the incident, which occurred in the nearby village of Wukari. Bishop Mark Maigida Nzukwein of the Catholic Diocese of Wukari confirmed the military’s efforts to make amends, emphasizing the importance of this apology in the healing process for the affected individuals and the community at large.
Uwa has not only apologized to Father Unum and the injured steward but has also launched a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. The general acknowledged the trauma caused by the assault and expressed his commitment to ensuring justice.
Bishop Nzukwein stressed the importance of the military’s role in the victims’ recovery. He suggested that beyond the apology, the military should meet with both the priest and the steward in person, as this personal acknowledgment would be crucial in initiating the healing process.
While the bishop appreciated the military’s initial steps, he expressed concerns over the unanswered questions surrounding the incident, urging continued investigation and dialogue to fully address the situation.
