OSOGBO — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has called on INEC, political parties and all candidates for the 2027 general elections to uphold the will of the people and avoid any attempt to manipulate the process.
Speaking on Sunday during the opening Mass of the CBCN’s second 2026 plenary meeting at St. Benedict Cathedral, Osogbo, the bishops also applauded the resilience of voters in Osun State during the recent governorship poll. They urged Nigerians nationwide to come out in 2027 and ensure their votes count.
CBCN President, Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, Archbishop of Kaduna, charged elected and appointed officials — including the President, governors, National Assembly members, ministers and local government chairmen — to provide a level playing field for all political actors.
He specifically urged INEC to improve on its conduct in the Osun election and ensure the 2027 polls are transparent, free, fair and credible.
“Conducting credible elections is within our power,” Ndagoso said. He stressed that the federal and state governments must work together to secure the country, fight hunger and poverty, and restore public trust in government.
“We have the resources. The challenge is the lack of political will to ensure a better life for all citizens,” he added.
The CBCN president acknowledged that democracy has not fully delivered on its promises, but said Nigerians remain committed to it. He noted that the fact citizens have not demanded a return to military rule, despite flawed and violent elections, shows their dedication to democracy.
However, he expressed concern over growing public distrust and fears that the electoral process could be compromised, warning that this could discourage voter participation.
“Nigerians are simply asking INEC to ensure free, fair, and credible elections,” he concluded.
