The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroyed over N1 trillion worth of fake, counterfeit, and substandard drugs in Awka, Anambra State on Friday.
The haul, seized from raids on Onitsha and Aba drug markets, included Analgin, Tramadol, and various banned pediatric medications.
Many of the drugs were stored improperly and violated WHO regulations.
NAFDAC’s South-East Zonal Director, Dr. Martin Iluyomade, representing the Director-General, Professor Christian Adeyeye, stated the seizures followed public complaints about counterfeit drugs in the South-East.
The drugs, transported in a 140-foot truck, posed a significant threat to public health and national security, with Dr. Iluyomade highlighting the link between these illicit pharmaceuticals and rising crime rates.
He emphasized the danger posed by improperly stored drugs intended for pregnant women.
Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASMATA) Managing Director, Mr. Mike Ozoemena, praised Governor Charles Soludo’s support for NAFDAC’s operation, including his personal visit to assess the situation following the market closures.
The Governor pledged continued State support to combat drug-related crime.
