Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former Nigerian minister who also served as the president of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), is now facing bribery charges following a meticulous investigation by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).
A prominent figure in the Nigerian government from 2010 to 2015, Alison-Madueke is suspected of accepting bribes during her tenure as the Minister for Petroleum Resources, allegedly in exchange for awarding substantial oil and gas contracts. As part of the ongoing investigation, assets worth millions of pounds related to the alleged offenses have been frozen.
Earlier this year, the NCA collaborated with the US Department of Justice to recover assets totaling $53.1 million, associated with the alleged corruption attributed to Diezani Alison-Madueke.
The charges against her outline a spectrum of benefits, including cash sums, chauffeur-driven cars, private jet flights, luxury family vacations, and multiple London properties. Financial rewards in the form of furniture, property renovations, staff for the properties, private school fees, and gifts from renowned designer stores have also been detailed.
Currently residing in London’s St John’s Wood, Diezani Alison-Madueke is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on October 2nd. The charges levied against her are a significant milestone in an exhaustive and intricate international investigation.
Andy Kelly, Head of the NCA’s International Corruption Unit (ICU), emphasized the pervasive impact of bribery, highlighting its role in facilitating serious criminal activities and the potential harm it inflicts on developing nations. The ICU’s partnership with domestic and international counterparts underscores the commitment to addressing the threat posed by corruption.
Throughout the investigation, the ICU worked closely with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria and the NCA-hosted International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre, showcasing the collaborative global efforts to combat corruption.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has granted authorization for Diezani Alison-Madueke’s bribery charges. Andrew Penhale, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS, stressed the importance of fair trial proceedings and impartial assessments in presenting charges before a criminal court.
