Valentine Ozigbo, a prominent figure within the Labour Party and former gubernatorial candidate, recently participated in the celebration of newly crowned octogenarians at the renowned Ito Ogbo festival in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. Alongside other notable Anambrarians, Ozigbo joined the community in honoring its elders and embracing the rich cultural heritage of the Ancient Obosi Kingdom.
The Ito Ogbo festival, steeped in history and tradition spanning over 500 years, is dedicated to celebrating elders aged between 80 to 89 years while they are still alive. It serves as an occasion to express gratitude to God for the blessings of longevity bestowed upon these esteemed members of the community. Held every three years, the festival features a variety of activities including prayers, songs, dances, speeches, gift-giving, and communal feasting.
Addressing attendees at the festival held on Saturday, March 3rd, 2024, Ozigbo commended the tradition for its emphasis on celebrating life during one’s lifetime. He echoed the sentiments of HRH Igwe Iweka of Obosi, advocating for the adoption of this revered tradition by other communities in Anambra State and beyond.
“This year’s Ito-Ogbo festival is truly remarkable. It underscores the importance of celebrating life while we are still living. I am particularly impressed by the collective nature of this longevity celebration, which contrasts with individual celebrations,” remarked Ozigbo. “I fully support HRH Igwe AC Iweka’s call for the inclusion of this celebration in United Nations and national observances. I also encourage every community in Anambra State to embrace this cherished tradition.”
The Ito Ogbo Obosi Festival serves as a collective birthday celebration for newly inducted octogenarians and stands as one of the most revered cultural events in the region. As part of the festivities, the newly crowned octogenarians visit the Eke Obosi market to express gratitude for the gift of long life.
Ozigbo took the opportunity to extend his congratulations to the families of Ogbueshi Ifeanyichukwu Anyaoku, Ogbueshi Obiageriaku Ononenyi Rita Chijioke, and Ogbueshi Dr. Mrs. Dolly Ozoemena Emodi, among others, who count among his close friends.
