In a fresh push toward sustainability and modern mobility, Pope Leo XIV has received two brand-new electric popemobiles designed to accompany him on international trips without harming the environment.
The handover took place on July 3 during a private meeting at the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo, with representatives from Italian tech company Exelentia and the Club Car Group in attendance.
These custom-built vehicles were created through a collaboration between Exelentia and the Vatican Gendarmerie, which monitored every step of the development process to ensure safety and suitability for papal use. Based on electric models by Garia, a brand under the Club Car Group, the vehicles were crafted with careful precision and detail — all by hand.
What makes these new popemobiles unique is that they are fully electric, quiet, and non-polluting, aligning with the Vatican’s increasing commitment to environmental care. Their design also allows for them to be transported by airplane without disassembly, thanks in part to technical support from ITA Airways, making them ideal companions for the pope’s international travels.
The compact size and agile movement of the vehicles make them especially useful in crowded places like city centers, religious shrines, and large public squares. To ensure the pope’s comfort and safety, each vehicle includes front handlebars and armrest supports for better stability during rides.
According to a statement by the Governorate of Vatican City State, the vehicles will be used both for private and public appearances by the pope around the world. The initiative reflects a modern and thoughtful approach to how the pope moves during his pastoral duties — with care for both people and the planet.
