The Vatican has officially announced that Sydney will host the 54th International Eucharistic Congress in 2028. Held every four years, the event is expected to attract tens of thousands of Catholic faithful from around the world to Australia.
Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP expressed his excitement, noting that this will be the largest religious gathering in Australia since World Youth Day in 2008. He emphasized the significance of the Eucharist in deepening the faith of believers:
“The International Eucharistic Congress is a joyous occasion that will deepen our understanding of the truth of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. As the source and summit of the Christian life, the Eucharist has the power to convert hearts and stir fervor,” Archbishop Fisher said.
He added, “It is my hope that in hosting the Congress, we will renew the sense of solemnity, mystery, welcome, and joy in our liturgical life, revitalize our Christian lives, and increase our outreach to those most in need.”
Sydney’s bid to host the congress was supported by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and the Fifth Plenary Council of Australia. For one week, the city will become the global center of Catholicism, with key events including large opening and closing Masses and a Eucharistic procession through the streets.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns also welcomed the event, describing it as a great boost for Sydney:
“Sydney is Australia’s global city and the natural choice to host a major event like the International Eucharistic Congress. The congress will benefit our economy with thousands of visitors enjoying our food, culture, and destinations,” Minns said.
The announcement came at the conclusion of the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress in Quito, Ecuador. This will be the first time Sydney has hosted the event since 1928 and the first time it’s being held in Australia since Melbourne’s Congress in 1973.
