Pope Francis delivered a message to the members of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum on its centenary anniversary, highlighting the institution’s significant contributions. He commended the Studium for catalyzing crucial archaeological excavations across various sites, resulting in valuable discoveries through its Library and Museum. The unique blend of Sacred Scripture study, immersion in Holy Places, and archaeological research defined the Studium’s distinctiveness.
Pope Francis opined that the members’ affection for biblical texts mirrored the spirit of Saint Francis, emphasizing that, for the saint, understanding and studying the Word of God were not merely scholarly pursuits but profound experiences aimed at enhancing Gospel living and fostering goodness. Pope Francis referenced St. Bonaventure of Bagnoreggio’s Breviloquium, emphasizing the need for a humble approach and heartfelt prayer to receive the gift of God’s Word. Additionally, the Pope encouraged maintaining this profound approach to Scripture.
Finally, Pope Francis urged those present to delve deeper into God’s word, resounding it more comprehensibly in the world. He expressed gratitude for their discreet yet passionate work, acknowledging its heightened significance in the present context. The Pope concluded by offering prayers for the Holy Land, where the Studium is situated, expressing concern for the ongoing challenges and calling for continuous prayers and efforts to end the current tragedy.
