A daring kidnap attempt at Holy Trinity Basilica was thwarted by the quick actions of the church’s vigilant security team. The suspect, who had managed to lure a young boy, aged 4-5, from an undisclosed nursery and primary school celebrating their end-of-year party, was apprehended just as he was about to leave the premises.
The incident occurred during the school’s festivities, which were in full swing with students gathered in the arena. The suspect was intercepted by a security guard (name withheld for anonymity) who found his behavior suspicious. The guard noticed that the man was trying to take away the child while the other students remained inside.
When confronted, the suspect could not provide a reasonable explanation for his actions. Sensing the danger, the alert security guard called for reinforcement. With the assistance of his colleagues, they subdued the suspect and detained him in the Basilica’s security holding area.
Upon interrogation, the suspect identified himself as Christopher Onwuatu. He confessed to a disturbing pattern of behavior, admitting an addiction to kidnapping young boys. Onwuatu revealed that he began his criminal activities in Abuja before relocating to Onitsha three years ago. He has been active in Onitsha since last year, particularly around Igwilo Street and the Akpaka Axis.
As our reporters arrived at the scene, the police were expected to arrive and take Onwuatu into custody. The swift action of the security team not only prevented a potential tragedy but also highlighted the importance of vigilance and community cooperation in ensuring the safety of our children.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in our communities and the crucial role that security personnel play in protecting our most vulnerable members. The bravery and quick thinking of Holy Trinity Basilica’s security team undoubtedly saved a young life and brought a dangerous individual to justice.
