In a written message sent to participants of the “Science for Peace – New Disciples of Knowledge: the Scientific Method in the Changing Era” conference held in Teramo, Italy, Pope Francis highlighted the significance of truth and charity in the pursuit of peace. The event, organized by the Diocese of Teramo-Atri in collaboration with the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, coincides with the 9th centenary of the death of Patron Saint Berard.
Pope Francis emphasized that an enlightened search for truth, coupled with charity, establishes a strong foundation for constructing a peaceful society. This approach respects the dignity of individuals and acknowledges the gifts bestowed by God. The Pope addressed his message to Bishop Lorenzo Leuzzi, commending the vocation and mission of scientists as a specific form of intellectual charity.
Referencing the words of Blessed Antonio Rosmini, an Italian priest and intellectual from the 19th century, Pope Francis stated that truth and charity are intrinsically connected. The pursuit of truth and the study thereof are integral aspects of genuine charitable service. Conversely, charity lived and exercised leads individuals to a deeper understanding of truth.
Acknowledging the current transformative era, the Pope emphasized that intellectual charity cannot be confined within research centers or limited to those directly involved. Instead, it should inspire and support the cultivation of renewed connections, as outlined in the encyclical Fratelli tutti. Pope Francis stressed the urgency for scientists to recognize the historical responsibility of their contributions across various fields of knowledge and to foster a new culture of knowledge.
Quoting St. Paul VI, who began his mission as the Archbishop of Milan in 1954, Pope Francis urged individuals to embrace “intellectual charity” and think expansively. In conclusion, the Pope reiterated the call made by Pope Paul VI to scientists and intellectuals in 1965 at the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council. He encouraged them to persistently seek truth, guided by St. Augustine’s wisdom, as an enlightened pursuit of truth in charity paves the way for constructing a more peaceful society.
During the conference, Monsignor Dario Edoardo Viganò delivered a keynote address, focusing on the challenges and risks humanity faces due to recent technical and scientific advancements, such as the Anthropocene (a term denoting the impact of human activity on Earth’s ecosystems, including climate change and biodiversity loss) and the rapid progress of artificial intelligence (AI).
