In a landmark address at the 2024 Catholic Theological Association of Nigeria (CATHAN) Conference in Abuja, Very Rev. Fr. Mike Umoh, the National Director of Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, championed the transformative impact of Magisterium AI on Catholic education. With an emphasis on ethical integration, Fr. Umoh underscored the importance of embracing modern technology while upholding the values and teachings of the Church.
Magisterium AI, developed by the U.S.-based company Longbeard, represents a groundbreaking advancement in Catholic learning. Fr. Umoh hailed the platform as a valuable resource for priests, seminarians, catechists, and all believers seeking to deepen their understanding of the faith. The app provides access to a vast repository of Church documents and teachings, making Catholic insight more accessible than ever before.
Despite its innovative capabilities, Fr. Umoh cautioned against overreliance on artificial intelligence, citing Pope Francis’ assertion that wisdom cannot be sourced from machines alone. He emphasized the irreplaceable role of human expertise and discernment in matters of faith and interpretation.
At the heart of Fr. Umoh’s address was a call for ethical stewardship of AI technology within the Catholic community. He outlined five key principles advocated by the Church to guide the responsible development and deployment of AI:
- Upholding the dignity and rights of all human beings, especially the vulnerable and marginalized.
- Ensuring that AI complements human work rather than replacing it, fostering new opportunities and improving working conditions.
- Prioritizing education and formation to equip individuals with the critical and ethical skills necessary to engage with AI.
- Advocating for transparency, accountability, and regulation to prevent the misuse of AI for harmful purposes.
- Encouraging collaboration among diverse stakeholders to promote ethical and responsible AI usage, guided by the principles of the Gospel and the Magisterium.
Fr. Umoh’s address marked a pivotal moment in the dialogue surrounding AI and its implications for Catholic theology and education.
