The Director of Social Communications for the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, has called on Christians to embody the core values of charity, generosity, and communal prayer, particularly during the Advent season. Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Catholic Herald on Monday, Fr. Godonu emphasized the spiritual importance of these virtues in preparing for the coming of Christ.
“Charity and generosity are central to the Christian faith,” he said. “Every Catholic is encouraged to share their resources—be it in cash or kind—with those in need. Alongside this, participation in community prayer through the Eucharistic celebration, individual devotion, and family prayer is highly recommended.”
Fr. Godonu described Advent as a critical period in the Church’s liturgical calendar, designed for reflection, renewal, and spiritual growth. He highlighted its dual purpose: preparing for Christ’s birth and anticipating His second coming.
“Advent sets the tone for a meaningful liturgical year,” he noted. “By focusing on repentance, embracing a virtuous life, and prioritizing the Sacrament of Reconciliation, particularly in the first three weeks, the faithful can approach Christmas and the new year with renewed spirit and purpose.”
The Director further drew parallels between Advent and Lent, describing both seasons as opportunities for deep spiritual introspection and transformation.
