Harambee Africa International (HAI), a Catholic development foundation, has extended vital support to more than 500 individuals facing various eye complications in Nigeria’s rural and marginalized communities. This initiative, aimed at improving vision care, has made a significant impact in Enugu State.
The beneficiaries from rural Enugu State underwent comprehensive medical screening, followed by essential treatment and specialized care.
HAI recognizes the prevalence of visual impairment in this Nigerian state, often resulting from untreated eye conditions due to limited access to medical services. The foundation emphasizes the challenges Nigeria faces in providing healthcare to its marginalized communities and highlights that uncorrected refractive errors, cataracts, and glaucoma are the primary causes of visual problems in these regions.
Collaborating with the Niger Foundation Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, a Nigerian institution dedicated to improving healthcare access for vulnerable populations in Enugu State, HAI actively supports a project designed to enhance the vision of rural residents. HAI’s financial support has played a pivotal role in bringing these initiatives to fruition.
The project’s primary objectives include preventing and treating blindness and visual impairment in rural areas while establishing an Ophthalmology Center for cataract surgeries. HAI reports that the initiative has yielded remarkable results, with 565 patients benefiting from free eye examinations, granting them access to essential care.
HAI’s focus has been primarily on rural communities, with 121 individuals receiving free screenings at the Iwollo Rural Clinic. Patients not only underwent visual acuity assessments and screening tests but also had access to refractive corrections and consultations with ophthalmology specialists when required. Additionally, free medical examinations, including blood pressure and blood sugar measurements, were conducted to ensure a comprehensive approach to health.
HAI acknowledges the significant healthcare challenges faced by Nigeria, including resource availability and equitable distribution of healthcare facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic has further strained the healthcare system. Consequently, the foundation’s efforts in Enugu’s rural areas aim to address these challenges and bridge the gap in access to ophthalmic care.
