The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki in Ebonyi State, joyously marked its golden jubilee, commemorating fifty years since its canonical establishment as a diocese. Created on March 1, 1973, from the old Ogoja Diocese in present-day Cross River State, South South Nigeria, the Abakaliki Catholic Diocese held a Thanksgiving Mass at St. Theresa’s Cathedral, Abakaliki, to conclude the grand finale of the jubilee celebration.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of Most Reverend Lucious Ugorji, the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and Archbishop of Owerri Arch Diocese, along with several bishops from various dioceses across Nigeria. Also in attendance was the Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru.
During the celebration, the host Bishop, Most Reverend Peter Nworie Chukwu, emphasized the significance of thanksgiving in Christian spirituality. Bishop Chukwu reflected on the historical journey of a Abakaliki Diocese over the past fifty years. Notably, he highlighted that Abakaliki Diocese is the only diocese in Ebonyi State and advocated for the creation of another diocese in the state. He expressed, “Abakaliki Diocese is the only one-state diocese in the whole of the South East. I want to say it before the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference, we need help. If we’ve additional dioceses, it would bring the church closer to the people.”
In addition to seeking the establishment of a new diocese, the Church has intentions to enhance the spiritual growth of Catholic youths in Ebonyi State by establishing a Catholic University. Bishop Chukwu also commended the state government for returning missionary schools, taken during the military era, to their original owners. He appealed for assistance in creating enabling healthcare services, especially in rural areas.
Governor Francis Nwifuru acknowledged the elevated status of priesthood and encouraged Catholic faithful to dedicate themselves to building their parishes. He assured his commitment to working for the well-being of the people of the state.
Most Reverend Lucious Ugorji, in a goodwill message, urged the faithful to remain steadfast in their trust in the resurrected Jesus Christ, despite current earthly challenges and tribulations. The golden jubilee celebration served as a time for reflection, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to the spiritual journey of the diocese.
