In a bid to promote socio-economic development across its rural areas, the Abia State Government has unveiled plans to launch community development initiatives known as “Community Choose Your Project.” These programs, to be coordinated by the Abia State Community Social Development Agency, signify the government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of its rebuilding efforts extend to the hinterlands, beyond the more prominent urban centers like Aba and Umuahia.
Mr. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, elaborated on the approach during a press briefing held after the State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia. The government intends to engage with communities at the grassroots level, allowing residents to have a say in the development projects that matter most to them. The cost of each project will be capped at N15 million to ensure affordability and feasibility.
Furthermore, the government has introduced a novel approach known as “equity participation” to enhance the success of these community programs. Under this system, participating communities will contribute 5% of the project’s cost. This approach aims to foster a sense of ownership and commitment among the people, ensuring that they actively participate in the projects and take them seriously.
“The people must invest their efforts and resources in these ventures for a more effective and impactful outcome. By contributing to these projects, the communities will have a stake in their success,” noted Kanu.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Policies and Interventions, Rev. Father Christian Anokwuru, has encouraged interested communities to submit letters of application specifying their project preferences. In this cooperative effort, the projects will be co-owned by both the government and the beneficiary communities.
Anokwuru also highlighted the necessity for each participating community to establish a dedicated bank account through which the project funds will be channeled. This measure not only ensures transparency but also streamlines the allocation of resources to benefit the intended projects effectively.
The “Community Choose Your Project” programs represent a proactive and inclusive approach by the Abia State Government to foster balanced development throughout the state’s rural areas. These initiatives empower local communities to shape their own future and build projects that directly address their unique needs. As the government moves forward with this strategy, it anticipates enhanced community participation, better project outcomes, and a more equitable distribution of development opportunities.
