The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to fulfill campaign promises made to Nigerians by addressing the prevalent insecurity in the country.
Expressing deep concern over the escalating violence in the Federal Capital Territory, Obi warned that the current security situation could deter foreign investment in Nigeria. He particularly highlighted the recent tragic killings of two abducted young girls in Abuja, emphasizing the urgency for leaders to take serious measures to address the situation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday via his social media handle, the former governor of Anambra State lamented the worsening insecurity under the past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. He reminded that President Buhari campaigned and won the elections in 2015 with promises to tackle security, the economy, and corruption.
Obi pointed out that after eight years in office, the security, economic, and corruption situations have deteriorated. He cited a statement made by then Vice Presidential candidate Sen. Kashim Shettima during the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in August 2022. Shettima had pledged that if the APC was elected, he, as Vice President, would be in charge of security, while the President would handle the economy.
Calling on the leaders to fulfill their campaign promises, Obi stressed the need for sincere efforts to end the spread of violence and insecurity in Nigeria. He proposed halting all foreign trips by government officials until the domestic issues are addressed, asserting that foreign investors and partners would be hesitant to invest in Nigeria given the current situation. Obi concluded by urging a concerted effort to curb violence and insecurity for the nation to make meaningful progress.
